You expect certain things with age – wisdom, wrinkles, maybe the chance to travel. But sneezing and itchy eyes? Not so much. Yet, adult-onset allergies are becoming increasingly common, even for those who enjoyed their childhood with barely a sniffle.
“If over the years you have suddenly started to sneeze when the seasons change or rub your eyes when the winds pick up in August, not to worry, you are not alone,” explains Catherine Oluwadare, brand manager for Karvol. “Research has shown that allergies can develop at any point in your life. While most people associate allergies with childhood, it’s not unusual to develop them in your 30s, 40s, or even later.”
According to the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, adult-onset allergies are on the rise, particularly in urban environments which can occur due to increased exposure to air and traffic pollution, as well as higher concentration of allergens such as pollen and dust mites in cities.
When it comes adult allergies, the most common ones include:
- Pollen (hay fever or seasonal allergies)
- Pet dander
- Dust mites
- Mould spores
- Chemical sensitivities (found in cleaning agents, perfumes, or cosmetics)
But, what triggers late-onset allergies? Although this is completely unclear, factors that can play a role include environmental changes (a move to a new city or region), hormonal shifts (pregnancy, menopause or even high stress levels can alter your immune response), viral infections (certain infections can reprogramme your immune system making it more reactive) and cumulative exposure (with repeated exposure to allergens your immune system might reach a tipping point). Your immune system is complex and adaptable, which can lead to unpredictable results.
Adult-onset allergy symptoms can often mimic other conditions, leading to them being overlooked or misdiagnosed. If you’re experiencing persistent sneezing or nasal congestion, itchy and watery eyes, unexplained skin rashes or hives or even shortness of breath and wheezing, allergies could be to blame*. These symptoms may develop gradually and intensify with time. It’s important to take them seriously, as untreated allergies can worsen and, in some cases, become life-threatening.
The good news. Adult-onset allergies are manageable, and here’s how:
- Use a trusted decongestant: Karvol’s range of decongestant products can help manage the symptoms of allergies with its aromatic formulation of menthol, camphor, eucalyptus, thymol and lavender. Karvol’s capsules decanted into a humidifier, a bowl of hot water for steaming, or even simply dropped on a handkerchief and breathed in, can allow you to get effective relief quickly.
- Avoid triggers: Simple lifestyle adjustments (like using air purifiers or checking pollen counts) can make a big difference.
- Medication: Antihistamines, corticosteroids, and decongestants are effective for most cases. Please consult your doctor beforehand.
- Diet tweaks: If food is the culprit, careful label-reading and working with a dietitian can help prevent reactions.
Developing allergies as an adult may be unexpected, but it’s manageable with awareness, care, and support. If your body starts reacting in new ways, don’t brush it off; your immune system may be trying to send you a message.
*Always take symptoms like throat tightness, severe swelling, or difficulty breathing seriously. These could signal anaphylaxis, a potentially life-threatening reaction that requires immediate medical attention.
